Dr. J. went out to dinner with two Harvard ‘educated’ physician-scientist friends (one New Atlantis Ivory Tower University faculty and one visiting professor) about a year ago, who Dr. J. had to remind of the scientific method as they were chortling about the ignorance of the local populace as a consequence of the occasional fundamentalist Christian dust-up regarding the teaching of evolution in schools and the latest current events regarding so-called man-made global warming. Our guest had to concede that he was playing fast and loose with regard to scientific fact vs. theory regarding the former, as the model is dynamic, rather than static as there are new data published routinely in the house organs of science. If we had all of the facts, it wouldn’t be a field garnering so much interest in peer reviewed journals. Regarding global warming, Dr. J. pointed out that they were not integrating all of the data into their model, and given that the jury is still out with regard to causation (as correlation does not equate with causation) and given the fragile nature of our economy, unilateral energy-policy disarmament would equate with economic suicide with dire consequences for the middle class, who already struggle to heat and cool their homes and fill their tanks with gas.

He also posited that those who would put draconian policies in place without vetting the both the risk (economic damage) and the benefit (the notion that these actions would actually carry with them actual environmental benefit, and what that that amount of environmental would mean to our nation) are demonstrably anti-science.

At that point Dr. J.’s colleague brought up the Patriots prospects for the remainder of the football season.

Dr. K. takes up this topic today over at NRO with regard to the president’s trip to Africa:

On the contrary. It’s flat-earthers like Obama who refuse to acknowledge the problematic nature of contradictory data. It’s flat-earthers like Obama who cite a recent Alaskan heat wave — a freak event in one place at one time — as presumptive evidence of planetary climate change. It’s flat-earthers like Obama who cite perennial phenomena such as droughts as cosmic retribution for environmental sinfulness.

Dr. K. lambastes the climate harpies for the lack of science backing what they’re clamoring for, and for the damage it would cause the American economy in the face of a global economy where emerging economies could give two flips about the environment.

What is bizarre about the piece is this concession that Dr. K makes:

I’m not against a global pact to reduce CO2 emissions. Indeed, I favor it. But in the absence of one — and there is no chance of getting one in the foreseeable future — there is no point in America’s committing economic suicide to no effect on climate change, the reversing of which, after all, is the alleged point of the exercise.

After all of his talk about science, and bashing the president as a flat-earther, why does Dr. K. favor a global pact? Just in case? To keep the emerging economies down? A little intellectual clarity would be nice here regarding that issue.

But other than that, Dr. K. nicely makes the point that Liberals are, by and large scientific Luddites when the facts don’t fit their endgame, be it with regard to the sanctity of life, or the dynamic nature of the environment.
