Matrakçı Nasuh’s Compendium of Stopping Places of the Campaign of the Two Iraqs of Sultan Süleyman Khan (1537) is an illustrated, first-hand chronicle of Süleyman the Magnificent’s 1535 war against the Safavids, then-rulers of Iran. It is beloved of architectural and urban historians of the Middle East, because it depicts with a great deal of accuracy many monuments and buildings that no longer exist (e.g., the mausoleum of the Mongol ruler of Persia, Hülegü Khan). With reports that MiGs have begun bombing Aleppo, there’s a chance that the great Crusader citadel of that city will join the list of vanished buildings.
