Our awesome number one Canadian reader (and most likely the number one Canadian, when we finally take over the world) submits some more thoughts:
America’s most recent manufactured-outrage race kerfuffle (ie. the white-Hispanic man killing the black-black teen who would look like the son of the white-black President) brought to mind a couple of personal anecdotes from this white-white Canadian.
Anecdote the first:
I don’t believe I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ve served on jury duty twice, which is quite rare according to the court staff. Both were murder cases involving drugs, where one death was over a low-level drug dealer’s debt (a self defence case no less) and the other resulting from a botched robbery attempt over non-existent drugs.
So while I’ve only had a minimal amount of formal legal training, I’m familiar with the responsibility of evaluating circumstantial evidence, reasonable doubt, witness testimony, and so forth, just as I’m familiar with how badly the media can be at covering criminal cases. After both trials I perused the newspaper articles and couldn’t believe the inaccurate and superficial reporting by the court reporter who was not relying on the incomplete, disjointed information available before a case goes to trial , but supposedly listening to actual testimony.
Which is why I’m totally unsurprised but still completely enraged by this whole sorry spectacle, even though I’m well aware of the motivations of the various parties at play. That 99.9999ninetynine999% of the jackasses commenting, tweeting addresses, doctoring recordings and breathlessly reporting ‘facts’ that support The Narrative have no EFFING CLUE what actually happened and don’t EFFING CARE who their irresponsible actions are endangering is apparently irrelevant in a country where ‘innocent until proven guilty’ used to mean something.
Feh…whatever. My point is that I don’t see how these actions, including Mr. Obama’s reckless and idiotic contribution, will have an overall positive effect on those people who naively and ignorantly voted for the white-black man in hopes of achieving some dreamy-eyed, post-racial, bunny-hugging utopia.
In short, I think this strategy of riling up the base will backfire. And hopefully badly.
(Somewhat exaggerated) Anecdote the second:
This past weekend I had to ascend one of the backyard maples to trim a few branches that did not survive the winter. Upon completion of said task, I discovered that my activities awoke Mrs. Canadian Reader, who was sleeping off either a three-day bender, or an overnight shift. Either way, there may have been some understandable grumpiness at play, and her initial reaction was to state that I looked like a monkey up there. Obviously, I accused her of racism.
Now of course the situation could have escalated, but I then recalled her reaction to the appearance of Mr. Obama on the television a short time after the Professor Gates incident.
“God I hate that a–hole.”
The best part was not that I necessarily think Mr. Obama is an a–hole, although he probably is, it was the absolutely priceless reaction on her face to the instinctive, unthinking voicing of the thought, especially from someone who is informed but not excessively partisan or political.
Which finally leads me to the same general point: I think plenty of Americans are feeling the same way to varying degrees, even if they’re not actively voicing or thinking it (especially with pollsters). It’s unscientific, anecdotal, uninformed and possibly wishful thinking, but I’ve had the feeling for some time now that Mr. Obama is not going to win a second term. While I did not watch Tuesday’s speech, I read enough transcript and commentary to confirm my belief that he once again piled on to the uneasy sentiment that the mighty centrists and reasonable Democrats are likely experiencing.
Fortunately, these pleasant thoughts quickly restored our usual marital bliss.
P.S. Oh yeah, not that it’s especially relevant, but we 23 WASPy Canucks somehow managed to ignore the defendants’ completely irrelevant race and found the black guy not guilty and convicted the white underage kid (who was sentenced as an adult). The black guy stupidly hung around town after being released and was murdered two weeks after the trial which was probably retaliation for his (most likely) self-defence killing of the mid-level drug dealer’s white friend, although as far as I know no one was ever caught.
And guess what: There is a whole pile of f—ks that I am not giving over any of it.
Божію Поспѣшествующею Милостію Мы, Дима Грозный Императоръ и Самодержецъ Всероссiйскiй, цѣсарь Московскiй. The Czar was born in the steppes of Russia in 1267, and was cheated out of total control of all Russia upon the death of Boris Mikhailovich, who replaced Alexander Yaroslav Nevsky in 1263. However, in 1283, our Czar was passed over due to a clerical error and the rule of all Russia went to his second cousin Daniil (Даниил Александрович), whom Czar still resents. As a half-hearted apology, the Czar was awarded control over Muscovy, inconveniently located 5,000 miles away just outside Chicago. He now spends his time seething about this and writing about other stuff that bothers him.
