Dr. J and I have traded a few emails regarding the outcome from the federal budget “showdown” also known as “Shootout at the Loser Corral”. First, Dr. J’s take:
Dread and Awful Czar [and Your Timeliness GorT],
As we all know, there was no government shut down on Saturday morning. Both sides are claiming victory while the screaming classes on both sides aremixed in their opinion.
Dr. J. has been reflecting on the ramifications of this agreement between the Republicans and Democrats. Dr. J. is of the opinion that this helps the Republicans more than the Democrats and these are Dr. J.’s reasons why:
10. We’re talking about chump change. The $38.5 billion is a drop in the bucket of FY 2011 expenditures. 2 1/2 days of deficit or so. Getting cuts rather than breaking even or even increasing spending is a good thing.
9. Underprivileged children with great academic potential will continue to enjoy the opportunity to attend the same private schools that Congressmen, Senators and the President’s children attend.
8. There is one less reason for the media to pillory the Republicans with the daily 2 minutes of hate. They will find other reasons though.
7. D.C. abortion funding has been cut.
6. Senators will have to go on the record with regard to repealing Obamacare or Planned Parenthood.
5. We got a soundbite out of Sen. Charles “Extreme” Schumer saying, the Senate will ‘never, never, never’ defund Planned Parenthood. This will help in many races in 2012.
4. This showdown has forced the President to go back on television, Wednesday Night (which will mess up Dr. J.’s recording of Survivor) to present President Obama’s Budget – Take 2, the deficit reducing edition, now including higher taxes.
3. Additional Congressional Oversight of the Executive Branch was covered.
2. The Republicans did not obtain a Pyrrhic victory (Dr. J. understands that Volgi and Pyrrus were BFF’s in high school) in order to achieve their goals. They did not shut down the government over Planned Parenthood or $100 Billion (a little more than chump change) while giving Americans who pay attention to these things a sense that the Democrats may be a bit more ‘extreme’ to use Chuck’s word, at the end of the day.
And the #1 reason why the Republicans won with this resolution of the continuing resolution…
1. The budget wrangling over 2011 is now OVER. Regardless of what the punditocracy thinks, this fiscal year’s spending issues are now OVER. The albatross has fallen from the House leadership’s neck. The House no longer has to occupy its time, energy or effort to take care of Former Speaker Pelosi’s unfinished work especially given that the a real fight over the 2012 budget is looming on the horizon. Dr. J. expected the Democrats to continue to run a prevent defense for the remainder of the fiscal year so as to continue to confuse the public over which budget was being fought over and to make the ability to the Republicans to get their message out more difficult. Now, if the Republicans are smart, they can run ALL RYAN ALL THE TIME regarding his road to Prosperity compared to Obama’s upcoming Road to Nowhere. Hopefully they have the C.O. Jones to be willing to go all out regarding the 2012 budget, debt ceiling and all other things fiscal.
Best,
Dr. J.

This was a timely email that Dr. J sent in as I received, oddly, an email from a Democratic lobbying firm over the weekend. I’m not sure how my email was released to them (I have a guilty pleasure desire to find that the Epsilon email leak was a modern-day Watergate-like attempt by the Dems and soon it will be revealed by DeepTexter) and I don’t want to give them free press to the millions reading us, so I’ll clip pertinent pieces:
But today the Democrats have shown that they will not be bullied by the Tea Party into abandoning our core values.
Instead, we won. And the Republicans lost.
Uh, huh – scroll back up you doofus.
[These cuts that weren’t made] represent stinging defeats for the Republicans, who’d assumed they could march to Washington and enact whatever radical social agenda they wanted – even if they’d kept it hidden during the campaign.
Not today they can’t – and they won’t ever if enough progressive Democratic legislators continue to stand in the way.
So all the stuff that Pelosi & co have tried over the last 4 years hasn’t been the Democrats “march[ing] to Washington and enact[ing] whatever radical social agenda they wanted – even if they’d kept it hidden during the campaign”? Right.
Let’s be clear about what happened. President Obama and the Democrats didn’t get everything we wanted. The Republicans negotiated in bad faith until the very end, constantly moving the goalposts like they always do.
The Republicans started at $31B in cuts and got $38.5B. Honestly, both are drops in the bucket as the Royal Surgeon states above – hardly enough. But when the Democrats walk in looking at $11B in cuts that’s just amateur. Now we face the farce that Obama is going to do something meaningful about the debt. Either (a) the poll numbers are telling him to move that way or (b) it’s more posturing. Wait and see.

GorT is an eight-foot-tall robot from the 51ˢᵗ Century who routinely time-travels to steal expensive technology from the future and return it to the past for retroinvention. The profits from this pay all the Gormogons’ bills, including subsidizing this website. Some of the products he has introduced from the future include oven mitts, the Guinness widget, Oxy-Clean, and Dr. Pepper. Due to his immense cybernetic brain, GorT is able to produce a post in 0.023 seconds and research it in even less time. Only ’Puter spends less time on research. GorT speaks entirely in zeros and ones, but occasionally throws in a ڭ to annoy the Volgi. He is a massive proponent of science, technology, and energy development, and enjoys nothing more than taking the Czar’s more interesting scientific theories, going into the past, publishing them as his own, and then returning to take credit for them. He is the only Gormogon who is capable of doing math. Possessed of incredible strength, he understands the awesome responsibility that follows and only uses it to hurt people.
